ZoZo Championship 2019: Tiger Woods shines on day one

Tiger Woods shots an impressive 6-under 64 on Thursday at the Zozo Championship in Chiba, Japan — the first official event in Japan, to take a share of the lead with his fellow Gary Woodland after the opening round.

Tiger Woods is back on the course after a long break and starts his proceedings exactly the way we know him.

The start of the opening round at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP is not up to the mark for Tiger Woods as he starts with a tee shot into the water. But, ended it with a share of the lead in Japan’s first official PGA TOUR event.

“I certainly was not expecting to shoot 6 under after that start,” said Woods, “That was a very ugly start and I felt that if I could get to under par for the day after that start, I figure most of the guys would be about 2-, 3-under-par with the wind blowing as hard as it was today, that I wouldn’t be that far behind. But it flipped and I got hot and made a bunch of putts.”

The last time fans saw Woods at a Tour event, the 15-time major champion finished T-37 at the BMW Championship, just missing out on a spot at the Tour Championship.

Woods and Woodland have a one-shot advantage over Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, who is settling at a 3rd position after the first day of play.

It was good for a rare first-round lead, shared with U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland. The last time Woods owned a solo first-round lead was the 2009 PGA Championship.

The 15 times major Champion Woods, making his 2019-20 PGA Tour season debut after a nine-week break that included left knee surgery on Aug.2019.
